Ex-wife of the world’s richest man Jeff Bezos, MacKenzie Scott has donated $2.7 billion to hundreds of charities.
In a blog post, the philanthropist said that she wanted to give this money to the people who have been overlooked and underfunded. She added that there are 286 organizations that are working on education, the arts and racial inequality.
A lot of the organizations she is donating to are public universities and grassroots organizations. She hopes that with the financial help, these organizations will be able to find new creative ways to help and strengthen their functionality.
In December 2020, she donated more than $4 billion to women-led charities, Black colleges, and food banks. Despite all of these donations, she is still the world’s 22nd-richest person, and currently holds a staggering net worth of $59.5 billion.
In her recent blog post, she said that she was keen to redistribute her wealth. In 2019, MacKenzie signed The Giving Pledge, promising to give away a majority of her wealth.
‘The Giving Pledge’ is a commitment made by the wealthiest people in the world to dedicate a majority of their wealth to giving back to humanity. It was initiated by Bill Gates and his ex-wife Melinda in 2010, along with Warren Buffett.
As part of her announcement, she said that she was unhappy over the growing wealth gap. This is why, she worked with a team to give away her fortune.
