The food you eat doesn’t only define your physical health but much more than that. According to research published by Harvard Medical School’s nutritional psychiatrist, there are certain foods that can cause gut bacteria to trigger brain inflammation. This in turn affects the memory. So there actually exists a list of foods that weaken memory.

Below, is a list of foods that can negatively impact brain health.

1- Foods that are fried

These include chips, fried chicken, fries, and more.

Researches have proved that such foods cause lower scores in memory and learning as well. The explanation for it is that these foods cause inflammation which can damage the blood vessels supplying the brain.

Moreover, studies have also proved that people who ate more fried foods have higher chances of developing depression.

2- Foods with added sugars

The brain basically utilizes energy in the form of glucose. But a diet rich in sugar leads to an increase in brain glucose. This in turn causes memory impairments.

Consumption of processed foods can therefore be dangerous. The amount of added sugar that one can safely consume every day varies from person to person. However, the recommended amount is under 36 grams for men and under 25 grams for women.

3- Carbohydrates with high-glycemic-load

Foods rich in carbohydrates, such as pasta and more, might not taste sweet. However, the body still deals with them the way it does with sugar.

As mentioned above, these foods can raise the risks of depression. But this, in no way, means that one should completely eliminate carbs from their diet. It is recommended for one to do research on the ‘better-quality’ carbohydrates.

To differentiate between the two, a questionnaire called ‘carbohydrate-quality index’ was conducted. GI or glycemic index was a measure of how fast foods are converted to glucose when broken down. Hence, the foods converting quicker had a higher GI rating.

Individuals with high scores on the carbohydrate-quality index ate better carbs. It was concluded that people such individuals had a 30% less chance of developing depression.
