Breast cancer is extremely common in Pakistan. With October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we all should make sure to educate ourselves on the topic. This month, we remember all those who have lost their lives to cancer.

Breast cancer occurs when the breast cells grow abnormally. The abnormally rapidly dividing cells form masses or lumps. These cells may also spread to lymph nodes or other parts of the body.

The causes may be genetic, hormonal, environmental, and lifestyle.

Signs and symptoms:

The most common symptoms of breast cancer are:

1- A lump in the breast. A thickening that is different from the tissue surrounding it.

2- Redness on the skin above the breast.

3- Changes in the appearance of the breast.

4- Newly inverted nipple.

5- Flaking of the breast skin or pigmented area around the nipple (areola).

How to prevent breast cancer?

With this type of cancer becoming extremely, common, it is vital to know some ways in which it can be prevented.

  • Breast self-examination
    This is a way for women to become familiar with their breasts. (Details mentioned below).
  • Talk to your doctor about breast cancer screening
    Go through the complete details about breast screening with your doctor and when you can start.
  • Maintain a healthy weight and go for a healthy diet.
  • Don’t skip exercise most days of the week.

How to do breast self-examination

Breast self-exam is extremely important. Through this, you might be able to detect cancer at an early stage.

Below, we have mentioned a guide through which you can do breast self-examination.

1- Examine your breasts in the mirror with your shoulders straight and your arms on your hips.

Examine the color, size, and shape of your breasts.

2- Then raise your arms and examine the breasts again.

3- Notice if there is any type of fluid coming out of the nipples.

4- While lying down, feel your breasts. Use your left hand to feel your right breast and vice versa. Keeping a firm, smooth touch, use the finger pads of your first few fingers. Go for a circular motion.

Examine the entire breasts from top to bottom, sides. Also from your armpit to cleavage and collarbone to the top of the abdomen.

You can start at your nipples and move in large circles.

5- Feel the breast while you are standing or sitting. Use the same hand movements as described in the previous step.
