Workplace harassment has become a huge problem in Pakistan. Not only is it persistent in corporate setups, but also in other work areas.
Recently, a senior doctor shared her experience of getting blackmailed and harassed at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center in Karachi. The doctor heads the hospital’s hepatology and gastroenterology ward.
Dr. Nazish Butt is the only female gastroenterologist working at a public hospital in the country. Staff members are forcing her to quit her job. While talking to a local news source, she revealed that her colleagues discriminate against her due to her ethnicity and gender.
The doctor said that she is a Pakistani citizen, and was born in Karachi. She studied here and graduated from here too. She married someone from Karachi as well. Yet, there are people, including staff members, who are harassing her.
This behavior has left her mentally disturbed. Butt filed multiple complaints about this treatment but their feeble response left her unsatisfied. She wanted to make the matter public now and urge higher authorities for help.
Dr. Nazish said that she is called a ‘Punjabi woman’, receives abuses, and baseless posts against her are shared on social media. Fed up with this treatment, her aim is to bring the case to the provincial health minister Dr. Azra Pechuho.
She said that she treats her patients without asking about their color, ethnicity, or gender. The gastroenterologist went on to say that she was unaware of whether or not other female staff members received the same treatment.
Answering a question, Dr. Nazish said that she examines more than 400 patients every day. These are mostly women, who visit her from different areas to receive treatment for their intestinal, liver, and gastro issues.
She, along with her team, has performed around 20 endoscopies and colonoscopies in an emergency when people came to the hospital with internal bleeding.
