The sister duo is the first-ever female entrepreneur to open a restaurant in their city. They grew up in a rural area. Suman stated in the interview that their father, Mazhar Ali Laghari, is a landlord and has a big social circle. ‘We used to manage a lot of guests. We served them home-cooked meals and cooking was done in a small kitchen of our house,’ she said.

The sisters are in their mid-twenties now. Their restaurant named ‘Black Pepper’ is known for its spices. The unique taste of cuisines makes it among the best. According to the sisters, they chose this name for their restaurant because they have a variety of food and a versatile menu.

Despite the variety, their signature offering is the Royal Sindhi Biryani. It is among the best seller along with club sandwiches and chicken karahi. There are also many options in the ‘fast food’ category to choose from. On the menu, there are options of Chinese, Desi specialties, Barbecue, and vegetarian.

Their head chief named Akbar Solangi is from a family of chefs that the Lagharis have known for years. Suman told that all the recipes have been tried and approved at home first. She is a computer science graduate who is in charge of the cash till at the restaurant.

The sisters are also planning to introduce pudding based on their Aunt’s special recipe. ‘It has been served for many years at our village home,’ they told.

Anum is in charge of the overall management. The restaurant opened in December 2021. They started off by serving only two customers the first day. However, now they have around 150-200 customers every day. The sister duo also told that a vast majority among these customers are women who feel comfortable coming to Black Pepper as they know it is run by women.

Anum also revealed that she left her nine to five job so she could focus solely on the restaurant. ‘I always wanted to work harder and be my own boss,’ she told.

The sisters also plan to hire more female servers so women coming to Black Pepper would feel comfortable. They also have security guards since the very first day.

Anum and Suman opened up about the challenges they faced with opening a new business. For them, acceptance from society was a major concern. However, their father gave them the courage to go for it. The two confessed that it was their father’s support that made things easier for them to tackle everything in the male-dominated space in Hyderabad.
