Prominent religious preacher Mufti Tariq Masood has spread a controversy after a sermon of his, in which he openly approved of ‘pedophilia’ and ‘child marriage.’
During the sermon, he said that if a person marries three widows, he will get him a fourth bride, which will be a ‘virgin’.
“Change my name if I don’t get you a fourth virgin wife after you marry three widows or divorcees…Mufti Tariq Masood will find you a 16-year-old or two eight-year-old or four four-years-old” he said in a video that is now making rounds on the internet.
What’s even more mind-boggling is that as soon as those words came out of his mouth, he began to laugh along with his followers.
Child marriage and pedophilia – Pakistan’s own ticking bomb
Is child marriage something to joke about? No, it is absolutely not. Taking into account the current state of women in Pakistan, where sexual assault, harassment, and rape against women and also minors, is a persistent issue, religious clerics have a big responsibility on their shoulders.
Not too long ago, the news of a four-year-old rape survivor shook the entire country, and the young girl is still in the hospital fighting the battle of life and death. Another one is the case of Arzoo Raja, and another ‘Zainab’ case, where the victim was just a two-year-old baby. Religious preachers don’t even touch these cases, but one thing they love to joke about is ‘pedophilia,’ Pakistan’s own ticking bomb.
Pakistan is the country with the highest number of child brides globally, and the negative consequences of this are beyond the girls themselves. We are already seeing a disturbing rise in rape cases in the country, where mainly victims are minors, and it is in times like these, we need to discourage these practices and think about the well-being, health, and security of our children. The last thing our country needs is prominent religious clerics like Tariq Masood sitting in front of a large gathering of people and joke about ‘underage marriages’ and ‘pedophilia.’
This isn’t the first time religious scholars have encouraged or joked about pedophilia, the ‘derogatory humor’ is actually quite persistent. Tariq Masood’s comments are proof that the safety of women and minors is not something that bothers them, which is why, instead of taking this valuable time to turn people away from the common ‘practice’, he is joking about it, like it is a light-hearted matter.
