Mehwish Hayat is one of the biggest names in the Pakistani Film Industry right now. She’s done a lot of hard work in the past few years and been in numerous movies that have been fan favourites. From “Punjab nahin jaungi” to “Load Wedding” they were all masterpieces that revolutionized the Industry.
The people of Pakistan finally want to watch Pakistani movies again – she’s had a major role in making that happen.
Most actors and actresses of Pakistan end up starring in a movie or two in Bollywood and that solidifies that “they’ve made it”.
What’s different about Mehwish is that she didn’t go that route. She worked in Pakistani television and then Pakistani films but never looked towards Bollywood to propel her career forward.
In a recent episode of the “Think Epic” interview she was asked why all of her work is limited to Pakistan?
“I’m MashAllah getting so much work in Pakistan, quality work. My country has given me so much respect and self-respect is very important to me. The way things work in Bollywood, our actors go and work there but they don’t get the same respect, they can’t attend the premieres or be part of the promotions of the film. Even travelling between the two countries becomes life-threatening for them. So where there isn’t self-respect, the money or fame isn’t worth it”
“For me, it’s always self-respect that comes first, that’s why I stayed in my country and my country gave me so much fame and respect that I’ve managed to inspire a lot of young girls and boys to come and work in Pakistani movies and be a part of Pakistani cinema”
“People follow us, we have an influence on so many people. Whether it’s 4000, 400 or even 4 people. It really matters that you have an audience that hears you, listens to you and understands you. Since so many people listen to me I feel like I have a lot of responsibility on my shoulders and as an artist, it’s my duty to put forward the best image of my country wherever I stand”
Mehwish Hayat has been the recipient of the “Tamgha-e-Imtiaz” for her work and has been one of the most prominent faces associated with the Pakistani Film Industry worldwide. She’s used her platform to always get a positive image of Pakistan out there in the world and has done an amazing job at it. This has really set the bar high for other Pakistani artists to follow in her footsteps.
