The expulsion of the two University of Lahore (UOL) students after they hugged each other after a public proposal on campus has divided the internet community. While some believe it to be more of ‘extreme’ action on university’s behalf, other justified it saying it is against the cultural values.
In a notification issued recently by the university, it was mentioned that the students were involved in ‘gross misconduct and are responsible for violating the rules. Moreover, they were called to appear before the ‘special disciplinary committee’ but they refused to do so.
On the basis of all these claims, the two have been debarred from entering the premises of the university along with all of its sub-campuses.
After the news about the university’s reaction went viral on the internet, the public showed their support to the students. Many known personalities, including Shaniera Akram and Bakhtawar Bhutto, expressed that it wasn’t something to which the institute should’ve been offended to this extent.
A majority couldn’t stop pointing out how the university authorities are usually very reluctant to take any action against those responsible in harassment cases and more serious issues but were quick enough to react in this situation involving two consenting individuals.
