“Nirbhaya’s” case is one that none of us can ever forget.
Nirbhaya was the title given to a gang rape victim in 2012 it means “Fearless”
She was a physiotherapy student, with her whole life in front of her. She wanted to be the one to help people and make a difference in their lives. But on the night of Decmeber 12, 2012 she was going on with her routine and going home with a Male friend on the bus with 6 other men including one minor also on board.
The minor alerted them that their stop was almost here, the male friend realised that the bus was far from where they had to get off and got suspicious, here the 6 men surrounded the two and asked them what they were doing out so late alone? It was only 9:30 pm.
After a scuffle, the friend was beaten up and hit with a metal rod and knocked unconcious. This is when Nirbhaya was dragged to the back of the bus and brutally gang-raped and beaten by the 6 men. Police and medical reports later showed that she had intense internal damage – possibly because a metal road (later identified to be the Metal L jack) was used in the attack against her. Two of the assailants claimed they saw the others pull a rope-like object from the victim – assumed to be her intestines.
They dumped the two severely injured out on the road at 11 pm, where they were found by a person passing by who called the police and the victims were shifted to a hospital.
Jyoti went through initial treatment and surgeries in India but after a cabinet meeting she was transferred to a hospital in Singapore, where she passed away on December 29, 2012, 48 hours after they landed.
The six men who were her assailants were arrested. One of them was a minor at 17-years old and severed the juvenile maximum sentence of 3 years. The others were all sentenced to death by fast track in 2013.
One of the men Ram Sing hung himself in his own jail cell in March 2013.
The other 4 Vinay Sharma, Akshay Thakur, Pawan Gupta and Mukesh Singh were hanged at Tihar Jail in Dehli March 20, 2020, at 5:30 am. This comes as India’s first use of capital punishment in the last 5 years.
