Aima Baig calls out Aamir Liaquat for his insensitive jokes

Aamir Liaquat is no stranger to controversy. Every few weeks we see something or the other pop up about him. Things that make us ask “How did this air?”. Remember “Aam khao” anyone?

Well, he just did it again.

Pakistani actor Adnan Siddiqui was a guest on Aamir’s show, “Jeeway Pakistan”. During the live show, he made what he called a “Joke”. He said to Adnan Siddiqui, who has worked in Bollywood that he saved the lives of Rani Mukharji and Bipasha Basu. He told Adnan to guess how he did that.

Aamir said “You worked with Sri Devi, she passed away. You worked with Irrfan Khan, he passed away”

You could see how physically uncomfortable Adnan Siddiqui was at this point. Yet, Aamir went on with his “Joke” anyway and said that because Adnan refused to work in the movies the women were leads in, they are still alive.

It had been just a few days since Irrfan Khan had passed away. There’s never a time or a place to joke about someone’s passing. Certainly not on live tv.

Adnan Siddiqui later released a statement on Instagram, he explained how hurt he was and how this joke was not okay at all. He apologized to the families of the deceased and said that he didn’t think they’d air that part of the show and he regrets even going.

In the era of the Internet, nothing stays hidden. What’s out there is out there. Aamir Liaquat has been in the TV business longer than a lot of us have been alive. He knew what he was doing. This isn’t the way to get ratings for your show. This not only is in bad taste but it is something that can affect the image of Pakistan as a whole.

Social media blew up in disgust after the clip of this joke went viral. People were not okay with this.

It got so bad that even Pakistani singer Aima Baig called him out on it.

It’s not common for actors and singers to publically call someone out. When they do, you know it’s because it’s something big.

After the outrage, Aamir Liaquat uploaded an apology video

In the video, he claims that “the joke was a mere slip of the tongue. It happens in live shows all the time!”

That’s the thing. Joking about someone’s death is not a joke and it’s definitely not a “slip of the tongue”.

He closes his video saying “Remember, the one who apologizes, is the bigger person”

This leaves us to wonder. How many times can one person mess up and get away with it by apologizing after social media outrage? How far is too far for these jokes? Is a line ever going to be drawn?
