How Often Should You Wash Your Hair?

Hair care is essential for maintaining gorgeous healthy-looking locks. However, sometimes in the effort of making your hair ‘extra clean’ you might actually do more harm then good. Maybe you’ve heard that shampooing less often is better for your hair or you might even be thinking of ditching shampoo and joining the “no ‘poo” movement in search of healthier hair.
Whatever your hustle, the end goal for us all is simply – healthy, voluminous hair!

Like so many others that just can’t stand the sight of grease-ridden hair, people jump onto the ‘i-need-to-wash-my-hair-everyday’ bandwagon way too quickly. The question is – is it worth the effort?

Experts say there’s no single answer to how often people should shampoo their hair. Actually, you may not need to do it as often as you think. It usually comes down to personal preference and most especially hair type.

Normal Hair

If your hair isn’t very oily or very dry, consider yourself lucky!
2-3 times a week should be enough to keep your hair clean & manageable. Limiting product use in your hair also reduces the chances of hair turning greasy (sooner than usual).

Oily Hair

Even if your hair is oily, daily might not be your best bet. Over-washing your hair can rid it of natural hair oils that are super important in protecting your hair follicles. Try to wash them after every 2 days & keeping them tied up can also increase their lasting time.

Dry Hair

People with very dry hair do not need to wash their hair daily, or even every other day. Over-washing can result in hair breakage or damage. Instead, washing you hair less often will help preserve the natural oils in the scalp, keeping your hair moisturized and better looking in appearance. 

If you have super thick, curly dry hair, then you can even get away with washing your hair just twice in 1 week.

Investing in a shower cap regardless your hair type is also a good idea ladies!

Hair produces natural oil called sebum, and shampoo is an emulsifier that captures/traps excess oil, dirt, product residue, which you then rinse out to clean the hair. For the most part, some of dirt is OK and natural – PLUS you defo want some oils to remain in your hair.
This is why you Lather. Rinse. Repeat for clean, healthy hair!
