Sharmila Faruqi expresses concern over the portrayal of violent husbands in dramas

Politician Sharmila Faruqi is having concerns over how violence is being normalized in Pakistani dramas. She questions why the serials always have to show a toxic, violent husband.

Sharmila took to Instagram where she highlighted a ‘slap scene’ from Khuda Aur Muhabbat. She posted a picture in which the character played by Sohail Sameer was slapping Sahiba, played by Sunita Marshall. She wrote, ‘Why can’t our dramas show a husband having a normal conversation with his wife?’

She expressed her concerns over why the dramas portray physical abuse against women over a minor inconvenience. ‘What you show in these dramas is what most of our people will emulate,’ she further wrote. She then referred to the specific scene of Khuda Aur Muhabbat in which Nazim Shah slapped wife Sahiba over a normal conversation. ‘This could have been a very normal conversation between the couple but unfortunately, our writers revel in the fact that once a man is angry he will resort to violence towards the women in his life,’ she added.

She then questioned the drama industry why they fail to show a decent man who would respect women.

Politician often criticizes the entertainment industry over the type of problematic content they show. She previously called out Gohar Mirza for his views on the slapback scene from Laapata.
