The movie marks the first-ever Pakistani film in Cannes’ official selection. With that, our actresses brought Desi glamor to the red carpet.

The Churails star, Sarwat Gilani was spotted in a gorgeous green fusion outfit to represent the country. Sania on the other hand was seen killing it in a traditional gharara. Alina Khan donned a red saari to the festival.

The film Joyland was shot in the Mehfil Theatre in the old city of Lahore. Apart from the theatre, another location for the shoot was Lahore’s oldest amusement park named Joyland. The movie was filmed over a 40 days period in 2021 during the pandemic.

Sadiq in an interview revealed that his inspiration for the movie came from his own family and a theatre close to his home in Lahore. He opened up about coming from a morally upright, middle-class family. According to him, he was unaware that this side of the world exists literally 10 minutes away from his house. ‘The world of theatre. Where sexuality is not a taboo. Women can get on stage and be in such positions of power where this is a certain form of erotica,’ he added.

He also stated how it was an ‘interesting way of examining himself’ as he realized that the same people sitting at the family dinner in his house would be watching those shows. ‘Only to pretend that they are not the same person existing in both worlds,’ he said further.
