Pakistani actor Humayun Saeed has taken to Twitter to announce his next project. The idea for it came after the actor realized only 1 in 4 female doctors practice medicine once they graduate. The reason for this drop can vary, but women are likely to quit their careers due to family pressure.
The actor talked about the plight of female doctors on his social media account, who are unable to practice their profession after marriage. He said that there is an important need to highlight the issue, and discussed the possibility of a project on the matter.
Fans were quick to pour in their support and appreciate Humayun Saeed for spreading awareness.
Plight of doctors
Back in 2019, it was noted that women made up 70% of the students in medical colleges. But, after their graduation, only 50% became practicing individuals.
Women are expected to ‘choose’ family over careers, which is said to be the underlying reason behind the drop. Often, families discourage women from practicing medicine after marriage.
Women in the field of medicine have to encounter all kinds of gender biases. One of these includes having their names left off of research papers, despite them doing all the work. Female doctors have even reported that their supervisors have asked them to not ‘get pregnant’ during training.
In many cases, women have to quit their profession and focus solely on becoming housewives. Careers of women doctors are a lot more intricate as compared to their male counterparts.
This had led to an overall decrease in women doctors across the country. It is a necessity that they pursue their careers as medical professionals because if they don’t, many women will be deprived of quality health facilities.
