A 41-year-old woman in Karachi commits suicide after constant harassment and blackmailing

As Pakistan continues to slide down in ranking on the Global Gender Gap Index, crimes against women in the country are still on a disturbing rise. Unfortunately, women are often made victims of heinous crimes that shake one to their core, and despite the increase in awareness regarding such incidents, action is yet to be taken on a big scale that will prevent such things from happening in the future.

Recently, a married woman committed suicide in Shadman Town, Karachi. The 41-year-old woman put an end to her life by hanging from the ceiling fan with her dupatta. The victim was blackmailed, harassed, and constantly received threats by a group of men.

The body has been taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities. Area SHO Liaquat Hayat Mehsud said that the family named six people in the FIR. According to the filed report, the brother of the deceased claimed that his sister took such an extreme step because she was fed up with constant blackmailing, harassment, and threats. As evidence, audio messages of the deceased were presented, which she had sent to her female friend. According to Shahrah-i-Noorjehan police, four of the six suspects named in the FIR of the incident have been taken into custody.

Gulberg SP Mohammed Azhar Khan Mughal said that one of the suspects had allegedly made an objectionable video of the victim and threatened to upload it on social media. Police is still actively investigating the case.
