Pakistan’s first female cricket referee, Saman Zulfiqar kicks off her duties in the National T20 Championship

Women’s representation in sports is increasing every day, however, did you know that there is no female cricket referee in Pakistan? Well, at least there wasn’t before, as the country’s first and only female cricket match referee has finally started her career.

Saman Zulfiqar has begun performing her duties in the ongoing National Triangular Women’s T20 Championship. While talking to a private news outlet, Saman expressed how happy she was about working as the first female match referee in the country.

Born in Sheikhupura, she was the only female referee in PCB’s development panel for the domestic cricket season 2020-21, which was announced in September 2020.

“I was so proud when PCB selected me in the panel, but now that I have started working, I consider it a huge honor,” Saman said.

The newly-appointed referee is very keen to learn and aims to seek as much experience as possible during her duties. Zulfiqar thanked the cricket board for supporting her and urged women to join the field she is working in.

“My message for girls is to pursue this field. PCB has provided me a good platform. The girls should also consider umpiring as a field”, she added.
