Child labor has been an issue addressed numerous times by the authorities and people too. To put an end to crimes committed against underage workers, the Punjab province adopted the ‘Punjab Domestic Workers Act of 2019’, which prohibits children under 15 years of age to work in a domestic service capacity.
However, despite the law, numerous incidents come forth every day of underage laborers getting abused. Such a case made headlines sometime back as well.
Hours after a case was registered against members of a family for beating a minor girl, the girl was reunited with her parents. She will be shifted to the Child Protection Bureau. The girl will also have to appear before the court.
The Child Protection Bureau filed a case in the police after a video surfaced of a family beating a young girl. After research, it was discovered that the 12-year-old is a domestic worker employed by the family.
“The family members said that they were hitting the child as she has a mental health condition. This is no justification for hitting her”, said Child Protection Bureau Chairperson Sarah Ahmad. She added that having a girl her age as an employee was a violation of children’s rights.
In the FIR report, it was mentioned that the incident had taken place in Faisalabad’s Eden Valley neighborhood.
Chief Minister of Punjab, Usman Buzdar also took notice of the video and sought a report from RPO Faisalabad.
“The chief minister has directed to take legal action against those involved in torturing the innocent child. Justice will be ensured to the innocent child”, a statement from the provincial government said.
